Ilya Espino de Marotta, Deputy Administrator of the Panama Canal
Ilya Espino de Marotta is the first woman to serve as Deputy Administrator of the Panama Canal, a crucial 82 km link between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The canal employs 12,000 people, generates $3 billion annually, and saw over 14,000 transits in 2023.
Before her current role, Ilya was the Executive Vice President for Engineering, overseeing all canal projects, including a $5.2 billion expansion. This expansion, completed in 2016, involved new locks, widening and deepening the canal, and creating a 6.3 km navigation channel for modern ships.
Ilya began her career in 1985 as the only woman engineer in the Panama Canal's Industrial Division shipyard. She has held various roles, such as Executive Manager of Resource Planning and Project Control and participated in the development of the Panama Canal Master Plan and Expansion Proposal.
In 2023, she became the canal's first Chief Sustainability Officer. Ilya holds a Marine Engineering degree from Texas A&M University and a Master's in Economic Engineering from Universidad Santa María La Antigua.
